SPRING, TX (KTRK/CNN) – The parents of nine children were arrested Wednesday after deputies found the family’s home in “deplorable conditions.”
Deputies obtained a search warrant for the Bell family home near Spring, TX, after more than one neighbor called the constable’s office, concerned they hadn’t seen the children in some time.
“We found, honestly, deplorable living conditions, very unsanitary, unhealthy. It was just no place children – or any person – should be living in,” said Chief Matthew Rodrigue.
Nine children, ages 13 months to about 10 years, were removed from the home. The youngest was hospitalized due to concerns raised by EMS on the scene, Rodrigue says.
Rodrigue says trash, food waste and mold were found throughout the home.
“They were talkative. Some were more withdrawn than others, but as of right now, we’re doing the best we can to take care of them and give them the most comfort and support as possible,” Rodrigue said.
Neighbors say the family had lived at the home for years, but few of them had ever seen the children.
“It's alarming, isn't it? It's odd,” neighbor Keith Barnett said. “It breaks my heart if there's something going on with the kids.”
Parents Sabrina and Daniel Bell were arrested for felony child endangerment and could face more charges.
Eight of the children are in the custody of Child Protective Services, with the youngest in the hospital. The condition of the hospitalized child is not known.
