BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police say a 5-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a car driven by a man fleeing police.

The Sun Sentinel reports that Jayden Readon was on a sidewalk near his home on Saturday afternoon when he was hit.

The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office says the car was being driven by 20-year-old Lex Eugene, who was fleeing Boynton Beach police after they tried to stop him for reckless driving.

The boy's body was thrown into a nearby field, and the car came to rest against a chain-link fence.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera says Eugene got out of the car and tried to run before police caught up to him.

Eugene is being charged with vehicular manslaughter, murder, and other charges.
