CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Fisherman in the Gulf of Mexico are used to coming back with spectacular catches, but one Charlotte County police detective reeled in more than just the usual grouper.
According to a video posted to the department's Facebook page, the officer in question caught a 50 lbs bail of cocaine floating in the Gulf.
"While out fishing yesterday evening, one of our detectives caught more then he was expecting. He located a package floating in the Gulf of Mexico more than 20 miles offshore," Sheriff Bill Prummell says in the video. "That package turned out to be more than 50 lbs of uncut powdered cocaine."
The video goes on to say that the cocaine has been turned over to federal authorities, and they are working to figure out where the cocaine came from. As for how much all that cocaine is worth, Sheriff Prummell puts the uncut value at $2.5 million, and the street value at more than $10 million.
