TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - NASA's Insight Lander reached Mars Monday and at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee, about 80 people gathered to watch.

The center hosted a Live Landing event complete with a live feed from NASA.

Participants also got to partake in hands on activities like building a straw rocket, building a Mars habitat, and making their own Mars rover.

"It is so cool because this is the first time anything like this has ever been done. And to say, the United States is the only country that has successfully landed any vehicles on Mars. So we continue that stretch," said Susan Borland, Education Manager at the Challenger Learning Center.

Insight launched on May 5 and it will examine the inner structure of Mars to help answer questions about the solar system.

Insight will gather information useful in preparing for human exploration of the red planet.

NASA said the Insight mission will last two years.
