MACON, Ga. (AP) — At least four central Georgia institutions have joined a growing list of colleges and universities imposing restrictions or total bans on hoverboards because of safety concerns.
The Macon Telegraph reports Fort Valley State University and Mercer University have barred the self-balancing scooters from dormitories, while Middle Georgia State University and Georgia College have enacted campus-wide bans.
Middle Georgia State University Campus Police Chief Shawn Douglas says the school is concerned about reports that a hoverboard's batteries could be combustible.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced earlier this month that it's investigating 28 fires in 19 states tied to the motorized scooters.
University System spokeswoman Sonja A. Roberts said in an email that the system is allowing each individual college to form its own policy on the two-wheeled devices.
