LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - A 17-year-old central Florida football player has died from what health officials suspect is bacterial meningitis.

Officials say Gil Kromer died Sunday at Tampa General Hospital.

Kromer was a senior at Santa Fe Catholic high and a starting tackle on the school's football team. Vigils were held for the teen on Saturday night in both his hometown of Sandusky, Ohio, and in Lakeland, where he moved with his family in 2011.

Bacterial meningitis is a severe form of inflammation of the brain.

A family friend told The Lakeland Ledger (http://bit.ly/1rr7x50) that the teen's body was kept on life support so that his family could follow through with his wish to donate his organs.
