TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Consolidated Dispatch Agency board has voted unanimously to appoint Chief Steve Harrelson of the Leon County Sheriff's Office as the new interim CDA director.

Monday morning, the CDA approved the recommendation made last week to appoint Chief Harrelson as the new interim CDA director.

Chief Steve Harrelson will serve as interim director for two months until they hire someone new. He will replace Timothy Mahler as interim director.

Mahler will move back into his role as assistant director moving forward.

"It's a good decision," said Vincent Long, the Leon County administrator. "We certainly appreciate sheriff Walt McNeil stepping up and volunteering someone with Chief Harrelson's experience in this regard we think just adds capacity to the CDA operations."

This comes after a recent audit of the CDA that criticized the agency for failures, due to human error and lack of oversight.

These include the ambush and murder of a Leon County deputy, mishandling of 911 calls for a shooting, and sending first responders to a wrong location during a crash that killed three people.
