TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Florida Department of Health in Leon County and Leon County Schools announced Friday that there is a confirmed case of tuberculosis (TB) at Godby High School.
Parents, students, faculty, and staff were notified Friday of the case. The health department says that they have begun to identify people who have been exposed to the individual.
Clinics and free tests will be set up at the school, but the Florida Department of Health has not announced when they will be happening.
Jackie Pons, Leon County Schools superintendent, will hold a meeting Wednesday, November 12th to answer questions about the case. The meeting will be at 6pm in Godby's Media Center. It will be open to parents, children, and staff.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial illness that primarily affects the lungs. The health department says that it may be spread when someone with TB coughs and a person nearby breathes it into his or her lungs. There are antibiotics to treat TB.
For purposes of confidentiality, the patient's name cannot be released.
