TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Cascades Park in Tallahassee continues to evolve as center piece for gathering and entertainment and Monday night a new addition is expected to be unveiled.
Construction began last summer on the Capital Cascades Crossing Trail and Bridge. Residents are invited to join and celebrate the opening of the crossing at 6 p.m.
City and county officials, along side the Blueprint Agency are all expected to make an appearance at the opening event.
The bridge and trail begin at South Gadsden Street, cross over South Monroe Street and end at Adams Street.
The intention was for it was to connect Florida A&M University with downtown Tallahassee, and Gaines and Lafayette streets for bikers and pedestrians. Now extending three city blocks, the connector bridge and trail took just over a year to complete.
"This bridge is unique in a number of ways and fast becoming a landmark for our community," said City Commissioner Gil Ziffer, Chair of the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency. "This segment of the larger Capital Cascades Trail provides a new, vital connection from Cascades Park to FAMU Way and Gaines Street linking our community together, which is the most impressive feature of all."
The cost of this project was just at $7 million which was partially funded by the Blueprint sales tax as well as the Florida Department of Transportation.
