TALLAHASSEE, FL (#WTXLDigital) -- Donna Cotterell came to Tallahassee with what she calls a "labor of love," a play called "Marigold Days" that traces the lives of slaves who called the Big Bend home.
Cotterell said she was inspired to create the production after seeing the headlines surrounding Eric Garner and the New York Police Department. Garner died while being detained by police, triggering movements nationwide regarding police brutality towards black men.
Cotterell wrote, directed and will perform in the play at Cascades Park Thursday at 6:30.
Her family has roots in the Big Bend, and she said coming back to Tallahassee gave her a sense of belonging.
She says marigolds and quilts have a symbolic meaning in her production. Check out the video above to learn more.
