RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA (WTXL) -- At least 1,600 homes have been completely evacuated. Wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour have played a major role in the fire's spread throughout the area. Strong winds not only fanned the flames, but also made it difficult for firefighters to battle the fire from the air.
John Miller is an area fire fighter, “We were unable to get aircraft onto the fire. We tried early on, but it was just too gusty. Firefighting aviation, whether it's fixed wing, retardant aircraft or water dropping helicopters have to get close to the ground."
At least one building was damaged and a number of others are still threatened by the fire.
