CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL)--A Cairo man dies just hours after he is arrested and pepper sprayed by Cairo Police.

On Friday night, officers were called to the Hardee's restaurant on Highway 84.

Police say the restaurant wanted the person, later identified as Franklin Lee, to leave.

Police responded to the restaurant and say that Lee appeared to be intoxicated.

As they were arresting him for disorderly conduct, they say he hooked his leg on the bottom of the patrol vehicle and would not cooperate.

Police say he continued to resist arrest so they sprayed a short burst of pepper spray and he slid inside the vehicle.

He was taken to jail.

"He was placed in a holding cell," said Steve Turner, GBI Special Agent in Charge. "He was decontaminated. All the pepper spray was removed from his body before he was placed in the cell and later he was found in the cell unresponsive."

He was then taken to Grady General Hospital but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The GBI was called in to investigate the cause and manner of death.

Agents say the officers were not put on leave following the incident.
