CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) - The city of Cairo has elected its first black mayor.
Voters in the Grady County town elected Booker T. Gainor, 27, on Tuesday with 57 percent of the vote. He defeated Hansell Bearden.
On Facebook, he posted a message to supporters saying the win is not for himself but for the citizens of Cairo.
He said his goal is to unify the city and Tuesday's win was just the beginning.
Cairo was not the only city to elect an African-American mayor for the first time.
