Building Tallahassee: New Gaines Street development

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - There's a new business on Tallahassee's Gaines Street.

The corridor connecting CollegeTown and All Saints has seen plenty of development lately.

If you've driven down Gaines Street, then you've noticed the construction, banners and signs, too.

There's been a lot of change in the past 12 months.

In December 2017, the iconic International Book Mine burned down.

In May, The Warehouse closed to make room for more student housing.

In October, GreenWise Market by Publix opened its doors and construction started on the new Hotel Indigo.

The latest addition to the area is Chase on the corner of Gaines and Gay streets.

This is the bank's first branch in Tallahassee. The company said it has plans for four more in town over the next three years.

We talked to Branch Manager Leidy Cuartas on Wednesday about why Chase chose Gaines Street for its first location.

"As part of our college strategy, we want to make sure that we're there for our customers from the early age," said Cuartas. "So, being close proximity to FSU, FAMU and the TCC campus is definitely important for us to be able to serve the needs of our customers."

The bank is sandwiched between different sections of the Stadium Centre apartments.

The newest complex called The Flex will start leasing next fall further down Gaines Street.
