TALLAHASSEE Fla. (WTXL) — The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Bend has recently joined Leon County Schools on a partnership that will go into effect at the end of this month. The partnership will bring about small change and better sustainability for the organization’s after-school services.
The Leon County School Board along with Superintendent Jackie Pons and Assistant Superintendent Barbara Wills approved the agreement during the January 28th board meeting. One change that parents aren’t to happy about is the change in location. The Boys and Girls club will no longer be housed at the Greg McCray Club on Laura Lee Avenue.
Instead, students will attend after school activities to receive help with homework and mentoring services at five schools throughout Leon County. Oakridge, Riley and Bond Elementary Schools, Nims Middle School and Godby High School, will be the new after-school sites for students.
Another major change will be in transportation. Transport services will no longer be provided for those attending charter schools, which will result in bus drivers losing their jobs since transportation will be taken over by the county.
The Greg McCray building will remain open through the end of February. Theresa Flury, Executive Director, of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend hopes this will give parents enough time to make a decision on rather or not they still want their child to still attend the club or find an alternative after-school program.
