ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling into a canal near an Orange County elementary school.

Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jane Watrel tells media outlets that the boy, his brother and possibly another child walked over to a creek near Riverside Elementary School after getting out of school. Watrel says that after the children crossed a fence to get closer to the creek, the boy tried to cross the canal on a concrete walkway near a large pipe, but fell.

His brother ran back to school to call for help. By the time first responder arrived, another child had pulled the boy out of the water.

Orange County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Kat Kennedy says the boy was alive but not breathing. He was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition.
