Booming Sound in Suwannee Possibly from Military Airplanes

SUWANNEE Co., FL (#WTXLDigital) - Some residents in Suwannee County are reporting they heard loud booms, rumbling, and rattling windows Thursday afternoon. And while some may have thought it was thunder, the actual cause may still have come from the sky but is actually man-made.

WTXL Meteorologist Casanova Nurse says that there was no thunder in the area that may have caused the disturbances so that leaves the question, what was the cause?

Staff Sergeant Russ Jackson at Tyndall Air Force Base says the booms and rattling may have come from military planes getting ready to begin an exercise at the base.

Jackson says the 2-week long exercise begins Monday but airplanes have been on the move from Eglin to Tyndall in anticipation of the exercise.

If residents keep hearing the booms and rumbling, Jackson recommends trying to get a look at the plane that may be causing it and then to contact Tyndall Air Force Base. He says having as much information as possible about the plane will help military officials narrow down how to reduce any noise it may be causing.

Kathleen Bergen with the FAA added, "If the loud sounds and rattles were caused by aircraft, they would be military, not civilian."

If the cause of the noise is from planes headed to the base, this wouldn't be the first time training sounds have carried long distances inland.

In December of 2014, the Tampa Tribune reported that booms from training exercises were heard as far inland as Gainesville.

WTXL also reached out to multiple law enforcement agencies in the area and we have not heard that any received calls or complaints regarding the noise.
