ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Bond has been denied for a north Georgia woman charged with fatally stabbing her newborn son hours after delivering him in her bedroom in early November.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports a superior court judge denied bond Thursday, saying 21-year-old Cassandra Elyse Norwood might flee the state or intimidate relatives if she is released. Norwood's relatives are also witnesses in the case.
Authorities say Norwood hid her pregnancy from relatives. Officials say after giving birth, Norwood used a large kitchen knife to stab the newborn and hid his body. Norwood was hospitalized for blood loss and told relatives she was having a heavy menstrual cycle. While Norwood was hospitalized, her sister found the dead infant.
Authorities say Norwood told them she stabbed the baby while trying to cut the umbilical cord.
