BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WTXL) - A special event on the water in Bainbridge Sunday afternoon was held to benefit local volunteer firefighters.

This was the 8th annual Bainbridge Southern Nationals Drag Boat Race at Earle May Boat Basin.

The event brings in anywhere between $5,000 to $10,000, which is split equally between the eight volunteer firehouses in Decatur County.

A lot of the time, the money is used for new gear and equipment to make saving lives easier.

Frank Kay, President of Decatur County Firefighter Association, says the community and the racers love the competition.

"The racers appreciate coming here. They say Bainbridge is one of the best facilities they race at every year, and they race all over from Louisiana to Florida, all over the place," said Kay. "The community is behind us. A lot of them come in appreciate us coming out here to raise the money instead of just asking for money."

The actual drag boat racing competitions were hosted by the Outdoor Drag Boat Association.
