TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL)-- FAMU President Elmira Mangum has been asked to step down after a Trustees Meeting on Thursday.
The Board approved an "Amended Employment Agreement,"making Thursday Sept. 15, Mangum's last day. The board approved the decision in a 10-1 vote. That decision upset quite a few vocal students.
"You say, 'Get involved,' and then when they do, you don't listen, so I think it's pretty clear where the university stands, and we're just going to continue to move forward," said Kyle Washington, a student at the university.
And FAMU is indeed moving forward as the board has named Larry Robinson as interim president. He also served as Interim President before Mangum was hired.
Some board members also echoed students in their desire to move forward and they said that they will do so by finding a new president.
Trustee Thomas Dortch said that, "Being intelligent and being a great educational expert also requires that you got to work with all stakeholders. And at the end of the day, this board of trustees is her boss."
Mangum simply wished that the board maintain better relations with the next president.
"I would just suggest that going forward, the board try to place honor and integrity as part of its negotiation with future president," said Mangum.
According to reports, the meeting was packed with faculty and students. More than 20 people addressed the board before the vote. A few students even slept in the lobby the night before in protest of the movement.
Despite all the support prior to the meeting, Mangum must leave the President's House in the next 30 days. She is on paid administrative leave until the end of her contract on March 31 at which time she is entitled to a 12 month sabbatical.
The board is giving her until October 2017 to decide if she would like to become a Tenure Professor or look elsewhere. Mangum has yet to decide.
