TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A special event this morning is raising awareness about suicide prevention.

The Bluebird Run and Walk was started by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Tallahassee, remembering 31-year-old Brook Bowers who ended her life five years ago.

Organizers say one person dies by suicide every ten days in Leon County.

Runners and walkers took over J.R. Alford Greenway this morning for the 3rd annual event.

The benefit includes a 5k and one-mile run-walk.

The family of Brook Bowers created the "Brookie-B-Fund" in her memory.

The goal is to offer opportunities to survivors of suicide to be more involved in spreading awareness.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month.
