TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - City and county leaders are discussing several projects that could drastically impact Tallahassee.

One major 'Blueprint 2000' project is the addition of a bridge over South Monroe Street to connect Cascades Park with the Capital Cascades Trail.

Funding would come from the one cent sales tax collected in Leon County, which is used by Blueprint 2000 to improve infrastructure around the Capitol City.

During Monday night's meeting, staff with Blueprint 2000 say they will be requesting a road closure along Monroe Street, south of Gaines and north of Oakland, to allow for construction to begin on the bridge.

It includes overhead solar panels that can be lighted at night, along with hundreds of yards of sidewalks, landscaping and a plaza between Monroe and Adams Streets.

Project staff say this bridge not only will provide better access to pedestrians, but has the potential for major business growth along the South Monroe Street area.

"South of the bridge along Monroe Street, there's a lot of commercial and retail businesses through there and we believe as this project is completed and used, it will provide additional opportunities," said Blueprint 2000 representative Charles Hargrove. "We want to make sure that we're not just looking at the infrastructure, but at the environmental..and sociological advantages to these projects."

Staff are asking for the road closure to begin in December, and to be in effect starting at 10:00pm on weekdays.

The total price tag for the project is $7.2 million.
