VEGA, TX (KFDA) - The billboard off of I-40 near Vega that gained attention on social media for its political message has been taken down.

The billboard stated, "Liberals, Please continue on I-40 until you have left our GREAT STATE OF TEXAS."

The sign was visible near Vega, Texas, a town around 30 miles west of Amarillo.

Just hours after pictures of the billboard began circulating around the internet, the story had been shared across the nation.

Randy Burkett, who owns Burkett Outdoor Advertising and the sign, told the Fort Worth Star Telegram that after all the backlash and media attention received, the sign would be taken down immediately. Burkett told the Star Telegram that the client who bought the advertising space would be reimbursed as well.

GoFundMe was created by citizens who wanted a new billboard that displayed, "Texas is for everyone--not for bigotry. Welcome y'all!"

In just nine hours, the GoFundMe has raised more than $2,000.

In the description, the funding will contribute to a digital billboard that is displayed for four weeks and any contributions that exceed the goal will pay for a longer display.
