Big Bend Students Score Big on State Assessment

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Big Bend area students have made big improvements on state assessments according to the Florida Department of Education.

The results of a state assessment show that there has been an increase of scores in mathematics, language arts, science, civics and U.S. history. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart said that Big Bend area students in particular showed a large marked improvement.

"Today's results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state's students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year," said Commissioner Stewart. "Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey."

Taylor County's overall mathematics scores increased by 41 percent while 94 percent of Leon County's students younger than high school age scored a Level 3 or higher. Franklin, Madison and Liberty counties all saw significant percentage growth in science for grades 5 and 8.

Other highlights in the Big Bend area include:

Florida State University School: Moved up five percentage points in Grade 5 Science, with 75 percent scoring Level 3 or higher. Increased three percentage points in both Civics and U.S. History. Improved two percentage points in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts, with 80 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.

Florida A&M Developmental Research School: Moved up 12 percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), with 66 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher. Improved 11 percentage points in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), and ten percentage points in Civics. Increased by seven percentage points in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts. Increased by six percentage points in Biology 1.
