TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Just over 44,000 Americans will die by suicide each year.
The organization 2-1-1 Big Bend says from July 1 of 2017 to June 30 of 2018, they received 45 percent more suicide related calls than the same period the previous year.
The Hotline Supervisor at 2-1-1 Big Bend, explains why this day is important in breaking some of the reputation with suicide.
"The more we talk about it hopefully the less stigma will be surrounding it and people will feel comfortable telling their friends or family, 'You know I am having these scary thoughts, I feel depressed,'" said Katie Kliner, a hotline supervisor at 2-1-1 Big Bend. "And hopefully there will there will be more awareness of the resources out there in the community. "
If you, or anyone else needs help, you can visit 2-1-1 Big Bend or call their 24 hour support line at 1-850-617-6333.
