TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – The holiday's often bring lots of joy, but that's not the case for everyone.

Sometimes, this time of year brings out loneliness, anxiety and stress.

That's why 211 Big Bend is encouraging people to watch for signs of depression.

Volunteers with 211 Big Bend say they usually see an uptick in calls during the holiday season people reaching out with feelings of loneliness, depression, and, in some cases, suicidal thoughts.

The American Psychological Association finds unrealistic expectations, financial pressures, and inability to be with loved ones can create seasonal depression.

That's why 211 Big Bend held a workshop this weekend focusing on how to recognize if someone is having suicidal thoughts.

"Around the holidays, a lot of the time it's spent with family and friends. And people who maybe don't have family or friends can often feel isolated and trapped in a situation where everyone but them is having fun. And that can definitely be very lonely and sometimes scary for people," said Dylan McMahon.
