TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The dream of owning a home came true for three Tallahassee residents Tuesday.
Big Bend Habitat for Humanity and the City of Tallahassee teamed up to build homes for families in Frenchtown and Griffin Heights.
Over the past three months, city employees volunteered to work on two homes on Harlem Street and another on Colorado Street.
Tuesday morning, Big Bend Habitat for Humanity handed over the keys to three new homeowners.
As part of getting the new homes, they had to volunteer to work on other homes built by Habitat. Johnny McGriff said the hard work he and the others put in was worth it.
"It feels like a dream come true. A brand new home -- it's an amazing feeling to have a key to a brand new home," said McGriff, now a new homeowner. "I said, 'Oh, man!' It just was a feeling that I just can't explain. And this key here -- I thank God for it. I'm going to cherish it for the rest of my life."
The City has now built a total of five homes, working with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity.
