MANATEE Co., Fla (WWSB) - The search is on for a possible suspect in a recent hit and run involving a bicyclist on Longboat Key.
A Longboat Key police officer discovered bicyclist 69-year-old Mike Maccormick laying in the grass on the side of the road near 4949 Gulf of Mexico Drive. It happened around 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2nd.
Officers say Maccormick had several cuts and bruises and couldn't remember the accident after hitting his head when he fell off of the bicycle.
Police are still trying to piece together what happened. Chief Peter Cumming says that Maccormick was either hit by a vehicle or fell off of his bicycle and then it was run over by the vehicle. It is being investigated as a felony hit and run.
A witness told police that he saw Maccormick riding south and an older model white pick-up truck passing by. The witness told police he heard a "thud" and someone yell an expletive. The witness did not see the actual contact between the truck and bicyclist because he was on the opposite side of the street as the accident.
Police have searched for this white pick-up truck, a possible late 90's model. They've located a few through the license plate recognition technology on the island, but Chief Cumming says nothing connects those vehicles to the crime.
Maccormick's back bicycle wheel was bent in the accident. Police say the damage isn't enough to determine whether or not it was a hit and run.
Maccormick remains in Blake Hospital and still cannot remember the accident, according to police. Police are hopeful that eventually he may.
Longboat Key Police are asking for the community's help in solving this crime. If you know anything about the accident or this white pick-up, you're asked to call Longboat Key Police Department.
