GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to be aware of a common panhandler scam that several of its citizens have encountered.

It is the "stranded baby toting couple at the gas station" or the pregnant female with a small child who approaches you while you are fueling your vehicle or in a parking lot as you enter or exit a store.

"Your kind heart says to give this young woman the the money she asks for, but your common sense says otherwise," according to a GCSO Facebook post. "So which do you listen to?

"If you’re like a great many folks, you give them a few dollars only to later discover you’ve been had as they leave in expensive or suspicious vehicle only to scam the next victim."

GCSO says be careful of strangers who approach you asking for money or help as it may put you in a danger and you may be scammed of your money.

"If you see something strange," GCSO advised, "please avoid at all cost and call your local law enforcement and as always watch your surroundings."
