BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WTXL) -- Bainbridge Public Safety and the Bainbridge Water Department will begin the annual flushing for every fire hydrant in their area of responsibility. The city has nearly 850 total fire hydrants they take care of.
The city says that the periodic flushing of the hydrants helps insure the integrity as well as deliver the highest quality water to its customers. The city of Bainbridge also tests one of three city zones' fire hydrants for flow and pressure. This process is shifted to a separate zone every year to ensure that every zone gets tested every three years.
"We've actually found toys, we found bricks, we found dog chains and stuff in there [the hydrants]", said Bainbridge Fire Chief Doyle Welch, "Once we open the hydrant, we flush it. Any kind of items that's inside that main line will come out of that hydrant and flush out."
Bainbridge public safety officials warn that during the flushing process, there may be some water discoloration, but the problem isn't serious and the water is generally harmless and it should clear out quickly.
If the discoloration persists, you can call Bainbridge public services at 229-248-2014.
