BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WTXL) - Bainbridge Public Safety is reminding everyone to stay alert and actively monitor your bank and credit cards, as well as your credit report.
Just last month, Bainbridge Public Safety had 11 cases of financial transaction card fraud. Typically, only a couple of cases are reported each month.
This type of fraud happens when someone takes the credit, debit, or gift card information from a victim and takes money out of the original account, whether it's sent to someone else, or used for purchases.
A person could also be a victim of financial transaction card fraud if their identity was stolen and a credit card was opened in their name.
"In that case, you might not necessarily get a bill to see anything. But if you was to get suspicious mail about credit cards, it always behooves a person to open it and look at it, and make sure to know what the material is before they just dispose of it or shred it," said Investigator Chip Nix.
Financial transaction card fraud can happen to anyone, no matter their age or race.
