TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Tallahassee has been a bit more awesome over the last year, and there's a special group to thank for that.

Awesome Tallahassee is nearing its first anniversary, and what a year it's been!

Each month, the group hands out a $1,000 check to a person or organization simply doing "something awesome" in Tallahassee.

It's part of the national Awesome Foundation. There are 78 chapters worldwide, and since 2009, it's funded more than 1,200 projects with $1.2 million dollars.

"The Foundation distributes $1,000 grants, no strings attached, to projects and their creators. At each fully autonomous chapter, the money is pooled together from the coffers of ten or so self-organizing 'micro-trustees' and given up front in cash, check, or gold doubloons."

Awesome Tallahassee was established in January 2015.

Each month since, three finalists have competed for the $1,000 award.

Applications are due the 15th of each month.
