IUKA, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been killed and a police officer injured after an exchange of gunfire inside a Wal-Mart store in northeastern Mississippi.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain tells The Associated Press the incident began Sunday evening as a traffic pursuit. He says officers from the Iuka Police Department were following a man who bailed out of his car and ran inside the Wal-Mart.
Strain says the officers followed and the man opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing him.
One officer was taken to a hospital for a minor injury and has since been released. No bystanders were injured.
Strain says the man has been identified as 34-year-old Howard Brent Means Jr. of Tishomingo, Mississippi. An autopsy will be performed, and the MBI is investigating.
