Valdosta, Ga (WTXL) - A hometown symbol for many Valdosta residents will be closing its doors this Sunday. The Valdosta Daily Times reports that Ashley Cinemas in Valdosta will be shutting down after 30 years of business.
Representatives from the Georgia Theatre Company explained that one of the many reasons for the closure has to do with an increasing use of digital projection versus 35 mm film. Because of this, Ashley Cinemas is not equipped to play new films.
Valdosta State University owns the property that Ashley's Cinema sits on and has been leasing it to the threatre since January of 2012. VSU is currently constructing an indoor softball facility on the property and has more plans for the future.
