TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Christmas is now less than one month away and many of us are starting to bring the holiday spirit inside by decorating with lights, garlands and trees.
While some people opt for fake Christmas trees, others prefer to go the more natural route and buy a real one.
Proper tree care may be daunting to first time buyers, so here are some tips.
Tree buyers should choose the greenest and freshest tree on the lot with needles that do not fall off when shaking the limbs.
Once the tree is at home, it should be placed in a tree stand away from heating elements.
Mike Bellamy, the public information officer for the Tallahassee Fire Department said, "Christmas tree fires are not that common, but they are very deadly. When we do see them happen, a large portion of the time, they do result in injury and sometimes death."
It is also recommended that when the holidays are over, real trees are disposed of properly as quickly as possible.
