TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Enlistment for the army is up and by the end of November, recruiters in the south east are hoping to see an additional 500 Floridians sign up for service, on top of the number normally recruited in the sunshine state.

Nationally the army is set to grow by an additional 16,000 soldiers (that's on top of its usual expected growth).

Army recruiters are offering bonuses and reduced enlistment terms, to target young people between high school and college, offering to pay for college through the post 9/11 GI bill.

Colonel Patrick Michaelis, says, he believes having the army "open for business" locally can contribute to the community as a whole.

Colonel Michaelis says today's army is more sophisticated than ever.
