TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Saturday, many veterans from the area will embark on their honor flight to Washington D.C.
This is the fifth year that "Honor Flight Tallahassee" has taken veterans from world war two, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars out to the nation's capitol.
While in Washington D.C., veterans will be able to see all the monuments, and memorials dedicated to their services, with the final stop being the "Tomb of the Unknown Solider."
There was no question about what we were going to do," says John Olson, a Navy veteran who went on a previous honor flight. "We covered every monument, every sight in Washington."
Honor flights like this one show our military veterans that their service and sacrifices were worth it.
"It means a whole lot to me because it puts on the face of everybody that this is a free country," continues Olson "This is a wonderful country and it's only possible by the veterans that are memorialized in Washington DC."
While some veterans have been to DC before, experiencing all the sights with other military veterans is very different.
Olson explains, "I've been up there many, many times, but this was different. This was different. This was veterans together, enjoying each others company, getting to know each other. And also seeing what we fought for, what we were in the service for."
Tomorrow's honor flight leaves early in the morning, but will return at about 9:30 p.m. The community is encouraged to come out to the FlightLine group hangar to welcome our veterans' home.
The address for the hangar is 3256 Capital Circle SW, Tallahassee, FL 32310, just down the road from Tallahassee International Airport. The hangar will open to the public at 7 pm.
