TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Apalachicola Riverkeeper kicked off the annual River Trek campaign Sunday.

Volunteers will kayak a 107 mile journey down the length of the river in five days.

It's both a fundraiser for the Riverkeeper organization and an awareness-raising campaign.

Volunteers say, living near the river brings the cause close to home.

"We live about an hour south of Atlanta where the Flint River starts. So that's part of the Apalachicola Chattahoochee Flint River system," said Tyler Carpenter, 2018 RiverTrek Paddler. "So managing that water as it comes down from Atlanta, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico, and keeping to just as clean as we can for future generations is very important to me."

Last year, the RiverTrek Team raised $60,000.
