TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -- A handful of animal activists gathered at the state Capitol Friday, in observance of the 33rd annual World Day for Farmed Animals.

World Day for Farmed Animals includes a coordinated, targeted series of demonstrations at slaughterhouses and other animal agriculture facilities around the world, in opposition to animal abuse they say is inherent in agriculture.

They were demanding the Department of Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam to address the impact of factory farming on human health, the environment, and animal suffering, and promote the benefits of vegan diets.

Sally Sanders, a volunteer animal rights advocate, organized the Tallahassee protest.

"We'd love to see more acknowledgement of what goes on with factory farming", said Sanders. "We'd like to see the animal agriculture industry acknowledge and just show awareness of some of the issues and not try to cover them up. And also we'd like to see some recognition that, yes we do need to move towards more plant-based agriculture."

The observance takes place each year on or around October 2nd.
