TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - In honor of the Fourth of July, the American Legion Outpost at Lake Ella retired about a thousand flags they've collected in the past few months from the Capital City community.

For the ceremony, the American Legion does a proper retirement and gives recognition of the flag instead of residents disposing it in the trash.

The burning ceremony took place with the supervision from Tallahassee Fire Department.

Veterans say this ceremony gives them a sense of pride.

If you would like to dispose of a United States flag, the American Legion Post at Lake Ella has a drop box. There they will clean and refurbish it in order to put it back into service.
