TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee International Airport is moving forward with renovations, that could bring many news jobs to the community.
Upgrades will include new furniture, an upgraded baggage claim system, new ticket counters, safety screening machines, a new TSA screening room, as well as a reconfiguration of the lobby.
On Monday, airport staff gave the local contractor Cook brothers, Inc, the official notice to begin construction. Phase one of the terminal modernization project will begin tomorrow. This phase of demolition is expected to last until March of 2016. Phase two of the project will be the installation process which is expected to be complete by October 2016.
The aviation director, Chris Curry says that he expects the project will add almost 200 jobs through labor and construction. Curry also says that the airport's updates will reflect what makes Tallahassee unique, "In the actual flooring, we'll have the seals of the academic institutions including Florida State University, Florida A & M, and TCC. What we want is that the airport will be a gateway into the community, so that when someone comes into the airport, they'll get a feel of what it will be like when they leave.">
The terminal hasn't had any renovations since it was built in 1989. Construction will be funded by the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), the Florida Department of Transportation, and local airport funding sources.
