TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The chairman of the Florida A&M University board of trustees is resigning his post following a failed vote to fire President Elmira Mangum.

Rufus Montgomery notified other trustees Friday that he's stepping down.

In a brief statement Montgomery said there needs to be an "effective working relationship" between the board chairman and president. He called the "current relationship is broken and irreparable."

Montgomery says that as a FAMU student and board member he has "consistently put FAMU first."

FAMU trustees came close to firing Mangum during an emergency meeting on Thursday. The vote came in the wake of allegations about expensive repairs at her university-owned home and improper bonuses for a top employee.

Mangum has denied do anything wrong and has accused some trustees of being on a "witch hunt."
