CAMP EDWARDS, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick says there is speculation among military officials that three Afghanistan National Army officers who went missing during a training exercise at a Cape Cod military base may be trying to find a way to stay in the United States.
Patrick told reporters the military does not believe that the three soldiers pose a danger to the public. He said they are investigating a number of possibilities, including that they "might be trying to defect."
The soldiers had arrived at Camp Edwards on Sept. 11 and were last seen Saturday at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis during an off day.
Lt. Col. James Sahady of the Massachusetts National Guard said there were no details to report on the search Monday.
