VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - An activist group is planning to get a lawyer involved in their efforts to get Valdosta's Forrest Street renamed to Barack Obama Boulevard.
Last week, we told you 'The People's Tribunal' had hit a roadblock with the verification of their petition signatures.
Now, the group wants a lawyer to help ensure the city is following the law as previously set, after deeming 74 of the 140 submitted signatures unacceptable.
The tribunal's president says the group will do whatever they have to do, to get that name changed.
Reverend Floyd Rose, president of People's Tribunal said, "If you're involved in civil rights, you don't quit. If that means going to jail, you go to jail. If that means being killed, you get killed. You do what you have to do to win… and you can't win by giving up."
Valdosta City Manager Mark Barber maintains that the group does not have to start over. He says the city will do its part and move forward with the signatures the group has have.
After the rest of the signatures are collected and verified, 3 public notices must be posted in the Valdosta Daily Times, advertising council discussions.
Only then will the council vote on the matter.
