Triple A projects nearly 100 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home this holiday season.
This is an increase of 4.2 percent over 2013. In Florida, five million residents are expected to hit the roads to Grandma's house.
Traveling will be cheaper as well in 2014, as gas prices in Florida are down 80 cents from last Christmas season, with a gallon of gas now costing below two dollars and sixty cents, the lowest price in six years. On average, cheaper fuel will save drivers ten bucks per tank.
Triple A's W.D. Williams says many factors are leading to what is expected to be a record number of travelers in the coming weeks.
"This year motorists get an extra treat for the holiday season, because gas prices are low, consumer confidence is high and we have a slightly longer holiday period this year, " said Williiams.
And when it comes to travel by air, Williams suggests this is the year to get on that flight. He added, "Most travelers are going to hit the road this year. About 91% of them will be traveling by auto and about 7% by air. Actually, air fares are down slightly this year too, so if you are going to travel, this is the year to do it".
