BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - A man is dead after standoff in Brooks County ended with a house fire.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to a trailer home near Pauline Baptist Church on Valdosta Highway Friday.

The deputy chief for Brooks County Sheriff's Office, who is on scene, confirmed to WTXL that the man involved in the stand-off is dead, though GBI will not confirm his condition.

According to the deputies, authorities went to serve a probation violation warrant to a man Friday morning.

BCSO says a man barricaded himself inside his home when they tried to arrest him. That lead to a stand-off, and sometime during the incident, a fire got started inside the home.

Deputies say the man died following the incident. The man's father says the family showed up while the stand-off was still going on.

He says the man, who they identify as 31-year-old Timothy Smothers, Jr., "wasn't all there" and had mental issues, but they don't believe Smothers would hurt anyone.

The father says Smothers lived in the trailer home with his grandmother. He doesn’t believe she was home when the standoff started.

His father claims that family members were told to leave the premises or they would be arrested.

They later found out that the victim had been taken to a nearby hospital where he died. The father says they were told that Smother's died from a gunshot wound. However, they don't know how the fire got started inside the home.

We have a reporter on scene. We'll bring you more information as it becomes available.
