TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL)– Former senator Al Lawson announced on Tuesday that he will run for Congressional District 5.
Congressional District 5 includes North Florida from Tallahassee and Gadsden County to as far south as Jacksonville.
"North Florida needs a strong, progressive voice in Washington to protect those issues important to our families," said Lawson. "I fought for our communities while serving in our state Capitol, and I will continue to fight for North Florida's working families in Congress."
Lawson will officially announce his candidacy after he files for Congress in January.
Over the summer, Florida's Supreme Court ordered a new district map be drawn, the court then approved a map that created Congressional District 5.
Al Lawson has served 28 years in the state Senate and House and is a former state legislator. He has also worked as the Senate Democratic Leader and the Dean of the Florida Legislature.
