LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - Lowndes County swore in its new probation officers on Wednesday.

County commissioners approved the 2018-2019 fiscal budgetthat funded the new probation department, costing nearly $800,000.

Judge John Edwards said this position is a huge responsibility for all community members in Lowndes County.

“Anytime you're dealing with the criminal justice system and especially probation, you're dealing with people's lives, you're dealing with their freedom, some of the most important rights we hold as citizens,” explained Edwards.

Probation officers started training earlier this month and will officially provide services on July 1.
