TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Those suffering from blocked arteries in the Big Bend area may qualify for a new type of treatment being offered in the area.
The procedure is called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusions (CTO) and is a minimally invasive alternative for patients with completely blocked arteries that are not candidates for bypass surgery.
VIDEO LEFT: Dr. John Katopodis and Dr. William Dixon joined us on Sunrise this morning to talk about the new heart procedure.
The treatment uses arteries in the wrist or groin to access the heart, meaning the patient's heart is never opened. Those who undergo the procedure experience a relatively simple recovery and often can go home the next day.
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is currently the only center in the region performing the procedure.
