APALACHICOLA, Fla. (WTXL) -- It may be summer, but things are going to be getting chilly this weekend at John Gorrie Museum State Park in Apalachicola.
The park is hosting their free Gorrie Ice Days event Saturday, August 16 from Noon until 5 p.m.
John Gorrie moved to Apalachicola in the early 1800's where he served as the area's postmaster, city treasurer, town councilman and bank director. He later became a pioneer in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration by invention a machine that made ice. This was build in response to concerns about yellow fever patients and the need for keeping their care rooms cool.
During Saturday's event, patrons can celebrate Gorrie's ice machine inventions with ice sculpting demonstrations, children activities and more. Ellie Morris will also be on hand for a presentation on ice houses in the South.
John Gorrie Museum State Park is located on 6th Street, one block east of U.S. 98 in Apalachicola.
